L2TP (Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol)

An extension to the PPP protocol that enables ISP’s to operate Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). L2TP merges the best features of two other tunneling protocols: PPTP from Microsoft and L2F from Cisco Systems. Like PPTP, L2TP requires that the ISP's routers support the protocol.

LAN

LAN is an abbreviation for Local Area Network. Also known as an Intranet, a LAN is a communications network connecting a group of computers, printers, and other devices located within a relatively limited area (for example, a building). A LAN allows any connected device to interact with any other on the network and will allow limited access to the network resources, and is not (usually) public.

The main technologies in Local Area Networking have been FDDI, Token Ring and Ethernet. Essentially they are all different methods of passing data across the network, but Ethernet has become, over the years, the most widely adopted.

LES

LES - LAN Extension Service. A high bandwidth dedicated short haul connection provided through BT. LES offers a point-to-point, fibre optic connection between the customer's Local Area Networks at distances of up to 25 kilometres. LES circuits are presented as an Ethernet interface, allowing these remote sites to be connected into the network via Ethernet, helping organisations to implement Ethernet WANs. A number of different LES services exist, the most common being LES 10 (10mbps), LES 100 (100mbps) and LES 1000 (1Gigabps).

Linux

A widely used Open Source Unix-like operating system. Linux was first released by its inventor Linus Torvalds in 1991. There are versions of Linux for almost every available type of computer hardware from desktop machines to IBM mainframes. The inner workings of Linux are open and available for anyone to examine and change as long as they make their changes available to the public. This has resulted in thousands of people working on various aspects of Linux and adaptation of Linux for a huge variety of purposes, from servers to TV-recording boxes.
